Writing by J. Allan Wolf
Zendoscopy is the coming of age story of Sherman from his unconventional birth and youth in the 1950s through adolescence and into adulthood and marital bliss. Along the way, he faces occasionally srious and frequently hilarious adversity as he tries to gain worldy experience, especially in matters involving the opposite sex. Told in discrete episodes, the sum total of his experiences chroinicles a sometimes joyous, sometimes painful, and often hilarious voyage from the 1950s through the turbulent 60s and beyond, along with a dollop of philosophy and even a bit of cosmology along the way. Sherman and the people he encounters make up a motley group of folks you’ll want to know more about, and you will, in fact, find some of them in the not-quite-a-sequel, Weathergirl. Zendoscopy is available in hard cover and e-book formats from online booksellers.
Zendoscopy
Weathrgirl
Weathergirl takes place some years after Zendoscopy. Effie Mae, the notorious ten-cent airmal girl from Sherman’s youth, is now grown, married and divorced, and forced to deal with her dysfunctional, depressed, and frankly crazed ex-husband, who has abandoned his career as an accountant to become a third-rate nightclub magician. Saltzman, the gruwn up frat boy who once led groups of college buddies to a south of the border bordello, now lives with Consuela, the bordello’s former madam, while Sherman’s childhood friend, Larry, has become a cop searching for love. These characters, along with a colorful cast of others, find themselves in a frantic romp as they together attempt to find Effie Mae’s alimony-shirking ex, whose ever increasing desperation leads him to become one of the world’s most bumbling would-be wife killers. Like Zendoscopy, Weathergirl is alternately heart-wrenching and hilarious, and the reviewers agree: Wolf is a very sick but funny guy! Weathergirl is available in both hard cover and e-book formats.
Spacebraid and Other Tales of a Dystopian Universe
This early work by Wolf was a foray into the realm of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. The book is a collection of stories consisting of one novella (Spacebraid) and seven other short tales spanning a spectrum from horror to humor. What all of the stories have in common, though, is the common, most basic need for human connection that we all feel even when we find ourselves in the most alien of situations. Spacebraid and Other Tales of a Dystopian Universe is available from online booksellers in e-book format. Some hard copy editions may still be available from some outlets.
J. Allan Wolf was born in New York but spen most of his youth in Southern California. After over 40 years as a practicing physician, he retired in 2014 to spend more time with other passions: amateur radio, writing, and playing the guitar, the latter with the goal of becoming a rock star with a gaggle of adoring groupies. This latter goal has not worked out too well so far, but hope does spring eternal. Wolf’s work has been published in medical journals, and several special interest publicaions, including QST, CQ, and Radio Control Modeler. He is married, has two daughters and two adorable grandchildren.
